American Airlines is heading back to Seattle. From April 2, 2027, the carrier will fly twice daily nonstop between New York JFK and Seattle-Tacoma, ending an eight-year absence on a transcontinental route it served from 1992 to 2019. The roughly seven-hour hop (closer to six hours westbound) will use the 196-seat Airbus A321neo, a first for American on this route, which it previously flew with Boeing 757s, 767s and 737-800s.
The schedule offers an early 7:45 AM departure from JFK arriving Seattle at 11:20 AM, plus a late-afternoon flight at 5:29 PM. The return legs include a proper red-eye leaving Seattle at 10:38 PM and landing at JFK at 7:02 AM — American's first overnight service on this route since 2018. With 20 domestic-first seats in a 2-2 layout, 35 extra-legroom seats and 141 standard economy seats, there's a full range of ways to do it.
American is re-entering a busy market. Delta, Alaska and JetBlue already fly the pair nonstop, and Alaska — American's increasingly close partner and Seattle's biggest carrier — will together with American hold 55% of nonstop services by summer 2027. Peak July 2027 will see 11 daily departures, the second-highest ever for the month, behind only July 2018. Roughly 692,000 passengers a year now fly JFK-SEA nonstop, so demand clearly supports the revival.
American's broader JFK domestic network is growing too, reaching 25 routes by summer 2027. Additions include Bozeman, Montana, launching July 18 on a 737 MAX 8 — handy for Yellowstone country. Other routes span Austin, Nashville, Jackson Hole, Vail, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco, plus St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Overall, American will be JFK's third-largest domestic operator with about 72 daily departures, still well behind Delta and JetBlue.
Why care? Transcontinental nonstops between New York and Seattle have become competitive again, and more flights usually mean better fares and more choice of times. Morning arrivals in Seattle suit holidaymakers with a full first day planned, while the red-eye back to New York is a classic way to squeeze out a last evening in the Pacific Northwest. Business travellers get the 36.5-inch-pitch first cabin; everyone else can pick extra-legroom or standard seats on a brand-new Airbus. With flights bookable for April 2027, it's worth watching fares once schedules open — competition on this route is only heating up.
