Celebrity Cruises has hit a big construction milestone: the float out of the Celebrity Compass, the line's very first river ship. Announced via social media, the moment signals that the vessel is taking shape and remains on track to debut on European rivers in 2027.

The Compass is the tangible start of something much bigger. Steel was first cut on the ship in early 2026, and in the same breath Celebrity committed to a fleet of ten new river vessels, with plans to grow its European river operation to 20 ships by 2031. That's a serious ramp-up for a brand that until now has been synonymous with big ocean ships.

Speaking on a recent earnings call, chairman and CEO Jason Liberty framed the river product as central to Celebrity's plan to keep guests loyal across its portfolio — in other words, giving Celebrity fans a way to stay with the brand when they want something smaller and more destination-focused. His description of the concept is a handy summary: effectively a miniaturised Edge Class ship, the line's award-winning modern ocean fleet, adapted for the river.

What does that mean in practice? Edge Class ships are known for sleek design, generous suites, and high-end food and drink, so if Celebrity carries even part of that DNA onto the rivers, it's positioning itself against premium river players rather than budget options. Expect a contemporary, design-led alternative to the more traditional river cruise look.

For travellers, the takeaway is simple: the river cruise market keeps getting more competitive, and that's good news. More premium lines mean more choice, sharper pricing and newer ships on the Rhine, Danube, Rhône and beyond. The Compass won't sail until 2027, but early birds who like Celebrity's ocean product may want to watch for launch itineraries when they go on sale — first-year sailings on new river ships tend to sell quickly, especially during the popular spring tulip season and the autumn festive markets run.
