While Dubai grabs the headlines, Sharjah has a knack for calmer pleasures — and Al Noor Island might be its best example. The small island sits in Khalid Lagoon, a short hop from the city centre, and packs gardens, public art, a butterfly dome and a couple of decent cafés into a place you can comfortably cover in an afternoon or a long evening.
The headline attraction is the Butterfly House, home to more than 20 exotic species flying freely around visitors. Food-wise, Noor Café covers breakfast through evening snacks under shaded seating, while By the Bay is the dress-it-up option: waterside dining with Sharjah's skyline across the lagoon, bookable as a package with island entry, a guided tour and stargazing when the weather allows.
Tickets are tiered. The basic self-guided entry starts at Dhs35 for adults and Dhs20 for kids aged three to 12. Go late afternoon, catch the butterflies before 6pm, have dinner as the lights come on, and you'll get both versions of the island in one visit.
