Think you know what happens to light and sound underwater? Dive Magazine has launched a quick true-or-false quiz that puts your underwater physics knowledge to the test — and it takes about a minute to complete.
The quiz focuses on how we perceive the world beneath the surface, which is one of the more fascinating quirks of diving. Sound travels roughly four times faster in water than in air, which is why a boat engine can seem to come from everywhere at once when you're below. Vision, meanwhile, gets a raw deal: colours disappear depth by depth, with red vanishing first, so that vivid reef at 30 metres looks far bluer and murkier than your photos suggest.
The true-or-false format makes it an easy coffee-break challenge rather than a homework assignment. It's pitched at the general diving audience — useful whether you're freshly certified or have a logbook full of dives. Even experienced divers get caught out on some of these basics, since most training courses touch on sight and sound only briefly before moving on to skills and safety.
