Tired of refreshing the seat map hoping a window seat magically appears? American Airlines has quietly solved that problem for its loyalty members with a new app feature that does the watching for you.

Eligible AAdvantage members can now set their seating preferences — window, aisle or middle — right after booking. From that point, the American app keeps an eye on the seat map and, the moment a seat matching those preferences frees up, moves the passenger into it automatically. No manual checking, no alerts, no faffing around in the days before a flight.

A few ground rules apply. The feature only works on single-passenger reservations with an already-assigned seat, and it stops running 24 hours before departure. Reassignments are limited to seats within the cabin you've already paid for, and there's no extra charge — this is about better positioning, not a sneaky upsell.

American's Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden framed it as cutting down on trip admin: travellers get more control over where they sit while having to do less to get it. It's clearly aimed at the early booker whose ideal seats are snapped up months out, and who would otherwise spend the weeks before departure periodically checking whether anything better has opened up.

Why should you care? Seat selection is one of the most common gripes in air travel, especially on long-haul routes where a bad seat means hours of discomfort. If you're an AAdvantage member flying American — say, connecting across the US domestic network after arriving from Australia, where the US remains one of the top outbound destinations — this turns a low-grade chore into a set-and-forget setting. It's also a small but real perk for anyone loyal to the oneworld alliance who books American frequently.

The catch is that it's member-only and solo-traveller-only for now. Families on one booking and non-AAdvantage flyers still need to pick seats the old-fashioned way. But if American sees uptake, expect rivals to look at similar tools — airlines love features that quietly lock in loyalty.
