Charlotte Douglas International Airport has long been the weak link in American Airlines' premium network. It's the carrier's second-largest hub, yet its main Admirals Club there is cramped, dated and notoriously unpleasant at peak times. That's finally set to change: American has confirmed its new Admirals Club at CLT will span roughly 40,000 square feet — the largest in the airline's entire system.
The announcement builds on news from August 2025, when American revealed it would open both a first-ever Flagship Lounge and a new Admirals Club in Charlotte. We now know construction on the Admirals Club will begin before the end of 2026, though there's still no opening date for either space. If construction kicks off on schedule, a realistic arrival is 2028 or later.
The first design rendering suggests American is going beyond simply adding square footage. The concept leans into Charlotte's local identity — references to the city's tree canopy, its textile-manufacturing heritage, and a mix of southern warmth and modern polish. Travellers can expect distinct zones rather than one open hall: spa-style shower suites, multiple bars and serveries, and separate areas for relaxing, dining, working and charging devices. The look will follow American's current lounge design language, rolled out recently in Philadelphia, where a new Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club have already opened. A new Flagship Lounge in Miami is also in the pipeline.
There's a wrinkle, though. The previously reported plan placed the new lounges on the mezzanine level near the Concourse D and E connector, in a space totalling around 40,000 square feet — suspiciously similar to the Admirals Club alone. That has sparked speculation about where the Flagship Lounge will actually fit. The original idea was for the new complex to replace the existing primary Admirals Club, whose space the airport wants back. One possibility: the current club could be converted into the Flagship Lounge. American's press release was notably silent on Flagship Lounge details and timing, so watch this space.
Why should you care? If you hold Admirals Club membership, AAdvantage status, fly long-haul in premium cabins, or carry a co-branded credit card with lounge access, Charlotte is likely already on your itinerary — it's a mega-connector for the Southeast. For years, the airport's lounge situation meant queuing for a seat or skipping the club entirely. A Flagship Lounge brings American's top-tier international product to a hub that has never had one, and a 40,000-square-foot club should finally end the overcrowding problem.
The catch is patience. Nothing opens tomorrow, and the Flagship Lounge has no construction timeline at all. But for anyone routing through CLT regularly, this is the most significant premium-ground investment the airport has ever seen — and it signals American treating Charlotte like the first-class hub its passenger numbers always suggested it should be.
