Most shopping in Bali ends with a token gift or two. Ananda Soul offers a different proposition: handcrafted jewellery and small-batch clothing made on the island, with actual stories attached and money flowing back to the community. It's the rare shop-even-a-hater-approved recommendation, and it has three boutiques across the island.
The brand was founded in 2008 by German designer Christina Zipperlen, who has lived in Bali for nearly two decades. Her team handcrafts everything locally using certified recycled precious metals and responsibly sourced stones. Each design carries a symbol — love, protection, strength, transformation — so what you buy works as a keepsake rather than a whim. There are delicate necklaces, sculptural earrings, stackable rings and talisman pieces, styled to be wearable every day yet distinctive enough to last.
A recent addition has raised the bar: a collection of certified recycled 18-carat solid gold jewellery set with certified fair trade gemstones like sapphire, emerald and ruby. It's in the Bali boutiques now, with an online launch expected in October. The brand also produces its own clothing line — relaxed, elegant silhouettes in natural and organic materials and dyes, made in small batches and cut for tropical weather. Here's the catch worth knowing: the clothing is only sold in-store, so you'll need to visit one of the three boutiques to see it in person. They're at Jl Dewisita No. 8 in Ubud, Jl Labuansait in Pecatu (Uluwatu) and Jl Danau Tamblingan in Sanur, open daily 10am to 9pm.
The part that makes it more than a pretty shop is the social side. Ananda Soul has, since the start, offered flexible and fairly paid work to local mothers, and puts 10% of profits towards charitable causes, including the Bali Children Foundation. So the ring on your finger also funds kids' education and women's livelihoods on the island — a nicer souvenir story than a fridge magnet.
Who should care: anyone who'd rather spend on a piece with meaning than a mass-produced trinket, and anyone keen to support Bali-made design over imported tat.
