Bali has cleaned up again in the second year of Indonesia's Michelin Key awards. When the 2026 list dropped on 18 September, the island walked away with eight brand-new Key hotels, all four of the country's promotions to Two Keys, and a clean sweep of keeping every Key it won last year. Of Indonesia's 47 Key-holding hotels, 30 now sit in Bali - roughly two-thirds.
If you missed the launch of the Keys, think of them as Michelin Stars for hotels. Anonymous inspectors grade stays on five things: design, service, atmosphere, value, and how well a hotel connects to local culture and community. One Key means a very special stay, two means exceptional, three is the top tier.
Only one hotel in Indonesia holds that top three-Key rating, and it's Bali's: Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Ubud, set along the Ayung River with rice-paddy-lined paths and jungle-wrapped villas. Newly promoted to two Keys are The Apurva Kempinski in Nusa Dua, Bvlgari Resort in Uluwatu, Capella Ubud, Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay, and Soori Bali in Tabanan.
The one-Key newcomers read like a tour of the island's different moods: Desa Hay and La Reserve 1785 in Canggu, Desa Potato Head in Seminyak, Jumeirah Bali and The Ungasan Clifftop Resort in the Uluwatu area, The Ridge in Ubud, and The St. Regis in Nusa Dua. They join established names like Amankila, Buahan (a Banyan Tree Escape), Raffles Bali, Lost Lindenberg, Amandari, Bisma Eight, and Four Seasons at Sayan.
Beyond Bali, the inspectors flagged two three-Key properties elsewhere in the country: Amanjiwo near Borobudur in Central Java and Nihi Sumba, the wild-luxury resort famous for beach horseback rides. New one-Key picks elsewhere include Innit Lombok's stilted beach villas on Ekas Bay, Hotel Le Temple Borobudur just 700 metres from the temple, and Ta'aktana in Labuan Bajo with overwater villas inspired by Flores's spider-web rice fields.
Why should a traveller care? Because the Keys are a useful filter in a market flooded with glossy Instagram claims. A Keyed hotel has been judged on substance - how it treats guests, whether it feels rooted in its location, and whether the price matches the experience. If you're planning a honeymoon, a milestone trip, or just a week where the hotel matters as much as the sights, this list is a sensible shortlist.
