Carnival Freedom is back in service. The ship spent 35 days in the Chantier Naval de Marseille shipyard in southern France, entering in early September and departing for Barcelona, where it arrives on 9 October to greet its first post-refit guests.

The reason for the works traces back to March 2024, when a lightning strike damaged the ship's original funnel. The replacement is Carnival's distinctive new 'whale tail' design — a practical upgrade as well as a cosmetic one, since the line says it opens the door to additional ports the old funnel couldn't accommodate.

Guests will notice changes onboard too. The casino has been redesigned and expanded with more than 100 extra gaming machines, the video arcade is refreshed, retail spaces have been updated, and accessibility has been improved. The Freedom also now wears Carnival's 'From Sea to Shining Sea' bow crest, a design rolled out to mark the United States' 250th anniversary, joining the Radiance and Legend.

The comeback itinerary has two distinct chapters. First up is an eight-day Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona, followed by a 13-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic crossing that lands the ship in Port Canaveral, Florida on 30 October. It will be based there through May 2027, then shift its homeport to Norfolk, Virginia.

Carnival has also opened bookings for the Freedom's 2028-29 season. Those itineraries run from Norfolk through April 2029, with six- to eight-day sailings to The Bahamas, Bermuda, the Eastern Caribbean and Canada. Stops include Carnival's own private destinations — Celebration Key, RelaxAway and Half Moon Cay — plus Grand Turk and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.

For travellers, the details worth acting on: anyone eyeing a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise from Florida in late 2026 through spring 2027, or from Virginia from 2027 onward, now has a freshly updated ship to consider. Mediterranean fans have a short window — a single eight-day sailing from Barcelona in October — before the ship crosses the Atlantic. And with 2028-29 Norfolk departures already on sale, early bookers can lock in itineraries that mix Carnival's private islands with classic Eastern Caribbean and Bermuda ports.
