Emirates has quietly reworked its winter 2026-27 schedule, and two long-haul routes are losing the Airbus A380 in the process. Travellers flying from Dubai to Washington Dulles or Düsseldorf will mostly be on the Boeing 777-300ER instead — a smaller plane with notably fewer seats.
Washington takes the bigger hit. The daily A380 service, which had been due back on November 1 with 489 seats across three classes, has now been removed for the whole winter. The 354-seat 777-300ER takes over until at least March 28, 2027, cutting around 135 seats per flight — roughly 27.6% less capacity. Since Lufthansa's seasonal Munich–Washington A380 route wraps up in late October, Dulles will have zero superjumbo movements all winter.
Düsseldorf fares slightly better. November will be all 777-300ER, but a daily A380 returns for December and January before the smaller jet resumes on February 1. The route was originally meant to have two daily A380s in November, so the scale-back is substantial either way.
The reasons look straightforward. Emirates has served Washington since 2012 and carried over 290,000 passengers a year at its 2018-19 peak, but traffic has drifted down since — about 260,000 in 2025 — and the load factor reportedly fell from 76% to under 69%. That suggests the airline was flying more seats than it could fill, and the 777 better matches supply to demand. Rising fuel prices have also pushed Emirates to scale back its target of getting 110 A380s airborne by the end of 2026; fewer than 90 of its 116 airframes are currently listed as active.
For A380 fans, there's still plenty to work with. In December alone Emirates plans to fly the type to 53 destinations, including four US cities: Houston, Los Angeles, New York JFK and San Francisco. Europe is the superjumbo's biggest market with around 14 daily departures, led by the UK — up to six daily at London Heathrow, three each at Gatwick and Manchester, and one each at Birmingham and Glasgow.
If you're booking Dubai flights this winter, the practical takeaway is this: check the aircraft type before you pick your seat. A380 routes offer the famous First Class suites and the upstairs Business cabin, while the 777-300ER uses Emirates' denser 3-4-3 economy and a different first-class product. If the superjumbo experience matters to you, Washington is off the table until spring 2027, and Düsseldorf is a December-January-only proposition.
