Travelling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi no longer means sitting in traffic on the E11. Etihad Rail has launched its passenger service between the two emirates, with the trip taking roughly an hour and Comfort Class tickets starting from Dhs39 — undercutting most taxis and many intercity buses. But the advertised fare is just the starting point: with a little planning, the whole door-to-door journey can cost notably less.
The first saving is the simplest. Buying online via the Etihad Rail website or app is cheaper than paying at the station, and fares vary by departure time. A 6.43am service from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, for example, is listed at Dhs39, while the 4.43pm train costs Dhs49. If your plans are locked in, the Saver fare trades flexibility for an even lower price.
Families get a decent break too. Anyone under 18 travels at half fare, and infants aged two and under ride free on an adult's lap — which can make a family day trip between the emirates a lot cheaper than driving.
The ground-transport tips are arguably the most useful. On the Dubai side, Al Yalayis Station links directly to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station on the Red Line via a pedestrian bridge, so you can skip the taxi entirely and ride the Metro in. RTA buses also serve the area, and the RTA journey planner will map the cheapest combination.
At the Abu Dhabi end, Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station has Etihad Rail shuttle buses to ADNOC Headquarters, ADNEC Centre and Reem Mall for Dhs10, which you can add to your train booking. Public buses from the station connect with Abu Dhabi's main network as well.
Finally, Dubai's Nol system ties it all together. A regular Nol One-Day Pass costs Dhs22 for unlimited Metro, Tram and bus travel, with a Gold Class version at Dhs42. Etihad Rail has integrated its booking with the Nol network, so one QR code can cover the train and eligible public transport connections. Before defaulting to taxis, it's worth checking how much of the trip public transport can handle.
For visitors, this is genuinely handy news: the Dubai–Abu Dhabi day trip is one of the region's most popular, and a fixed, hourly-ish train service takes the guesswork out of it. Combine a cheap early-morning fare booked online with the Metro link and a Dhs10 shuttle, and you can cross between emirates for around Dhs50-70 all in — a fraction of what a private transfer costs. Worth building an itinerary around if Abu Dhabi's Louvre or Grand Mosque are on your list but you're staying in Dubai.
