Dubai is finally on the UAE's national rail map. Al Yalayis Station opened on September 30, 2026, becoming the emirate's first passenger stop on Etihad Rail — the 900-kilometre network slowly stitching together the country's cities and towns.

It wasn't a solo debut. Sharjah's Al Dhaid station also began service the same day, with trains running to Abu Dhabi's Mohamed bin Zayed City station and out to Fujairah on the east coast. Two days before the public launch, the UAE President rode the line from Abu Dhabi to Dubai — a pointed bit of symbolism for a project billed as the country's biggest transport milestone in decades.

Etihad Rail's passenger service launched only in late June 2026 between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, and it's already popular: more than 70,000 tickets sold in the first few months. Trains run at up to 200km/h, and once the full 10-station network is live, planners expect it to move as many as 36 million passengers a year by 2030.

The journey times are the real headline for anyone who currently drives between emirates. Abu Dhabi to Dubai should take around 64 minutes; Dubai to Fujairah about 50 minutes; Abu Dhabi to Fujairah roughly an hour and 40 minutes; and Sharjah to Fujairah a remarkably quick 25 minutes — a route that can otherwise eat up a big chunk of a morning in traffic.

Prices are aimed squarely at commuters and weekend trippers. From Dubai's Al Yalayis station, tickets to Sharjah's Al Dhaid start at Dhs19, while Comfort fares to Abu Dhabi or Fujairah start at Dhs39, with Premium from Dhs109. Book online or via the app, as counter tickets at stations cost a bit more.

Four stations are open so far — Abu Dhabi MBZ City and Fujairah since June 30, Dubai Al Yalayis and Sharjah Al Dhaid since September 30. The rollout continues through late 2026 with Liwa and Zayed City in Abu Dhabi emirate next (November), followed by Al Dhannah, Al Sila and Al Mirfa in December. Sharjah's University City station is due in March 2027.

Why should travellers care? If you're visiting Dubai and fancy a day trip that doesn't involve hiring a car, the east coast is now genuinely reachable. Fujairah's beaches, snorkelling and the Hajar Mountains scenery are about 50 minutes away by rail instead of a two-hour drive. And with Dubai-Abu Dhabi train fares from Dhs39, hopping between the two biggest emirates without dealing with Sheikh Zayed Road traffic is now a realistic option — a genuine alternative to intercity buses and taxis. The network is still partial, so check which station actually suits your destination, but it's a significant shift in how easy it is to see more of the UAE beyond Dubai.
