Science has settled an old argument among cyclists: which rides really are the most beautiful? Adventure booking platform Explore hooked 200 participants up to eye-tracking software, showed them 52 famous routes and measured how quickly each one grabbed attention and how long it held it. The result is a weighted "eye-catching" score out of 100 - and a top 15 dominated by Europe.
The overall winner is a long way from anywhere on the list: Canada's Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise scored 97, with Australia's Great Ocean Road second on 94. But eight of the 15 are European, and the interest is clearly there - searches for "cycling holiday" have jumped 292% on Google.
Italy takes the continent's highest slot at number three, with the Tuscany Gravel Routes scoring 91. Think cypress-lined climbs, working vineyards and hilltop towns, plus the same roads the pros race each spring. Germany's Elbe Cycle Route follows on 90, tracing the river roughly 1,220km from Czechia to the North Sea and passing through Hamburg along the way.
For something gentler, Amsterdam Cycle Route 10 (86) is a circular loop past canals, parks and out into quieter countryside. Provence's Lavender Route (81) is another relaxed option - but only in summer, when the fields around the Luberon and Valensole Plateau turn purple.
Legs of steel are needed for the rest. The Stelvio Pass in Italy (82) is the second-highest paved pass in the Alps and one of the toughest rides anywhere. Scotland's North Coast 500 (78) runs over 800km from Inverness and can take fit riders five days. France's Route des Grandes Alpes (also 78) links Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean through relentless climbs - one for experienced cyclists only.
The sleeper pick may be the Lake Ohrid Circuit, 14th with 76. It's a manageable 90-96km loop around the lake, crossing between North Macedonia and Albania, taking in Ohrid, Struga, the Monastery of Saint Naum and Pogradec. Bring your passport - the border crossing is part of the fun.
The full top 15 also features Chile's Carretera Austral (86), the USA's Pacific Coast Highway (82) and Road to Hana (78), Utah's Slickrock Trail (76) and Canada's Vancouver Seawall (75).
Why it matters: whatever your fitness level, there's a route here to match. Casual riders can book a long weekend in Amsterdam or time a Provence trip to lavender season, while gravel grinders have Tuscany, the Stelvio and the NC500 to choose from. And since most of the best riding is in Europe, the trip of a lifetime may be a short flight away.
