Formula 1 fans with flexible October plans are in for a rare treat — and Southeast Asian hotels are the unexpected winners. After the Bahrain Grand Prix was pulled from its original April slot in Sakhir amid conflict in the Middle East, Formula 1 relocated the race to Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit as a one-off event, running October 2 to 4. That puts Sepang back on the calendar for the first time since 2017.
The timing could hardly be better for a road trip. Just one week later, the Singapore Grand Prix takes over Marina Bay from October 9 to 11 — meaning two full race weekends, in two countries, within easy reach of each other.
The travel data already reflects it. Figures from Amadeus Travel Intelligence show booked air arrivals from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore for October 5 to 11 running 74% higher than the same period last year, covering exactly the in-between window when fans are expected to hop south from one race to the next. Hotels in both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are positioned to cash in on the surge, with the days between the races likely the busiest stretch.
For travellers, the logistics are refreshingly simple. Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are linked by frequent short flights, long-distance buses and even trains, so doing both weekends back-to-back is realistic — but book early. With arrivals tracking sharply up year-on-year and two international race crowds converging on the region in the space of ten days, rooms in both cities will tighten fast, and prices near the circuits and the Marina Bay street circuit will climb accordingly.
If you're only going for one race, the week between them is arguably the sweet spot: you can base yourself in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and enjoy the pre-race atmosphere, minus the peak-weekend crush. And beyond the racing, October sits outside the worst of the region's heavier rain months on the west side of the peninsula, leaving room for street food in KL, island detours, or Singapore's hawker centres between sessions.
A one-off Sepang race plus the usual Marina Bay night race is a combination that may never line up again — if the double-header appeals, this is the year to commit.
