Poljud stadium in Split hosted one of the loudest nights of the Croatian football season on Saturday, as Hajduk beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 in the first 'Eternal Derby' of the campaign. The ninth-round fixture pitched the league's top two against each other, both level on 16 points with third-placed Osijek, and Hajduk's win leaves them three clear at 19.

The football matched the occasion. Dinamo's Beljo opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a header from a Vinlof cross, but Hajduk were level within three minutes when Hrgović's set-piece forced McKenna into an own goal. The winner came in the 59th minute and it was worth the ticket alone: Bamba latched onto a half-cleared cross and lashed an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Kotarski.

The weather turned a dramatic match into an endurance contest. Rain held off until roughly the 30th minute, then hammered down relentlessly. By the twelve minutes of stoppage time, the pitch was so waterlogged that play was briefly suspended and the ball barely rolled. Dinamo threw everything forward late on and Beljo rattled the post in the 14th minute of added time, but Hajduk held on.

Off the ball, it was classic derby theatre. The near-sellout crowd braved the forecast, flares from both the Bad Blue Boys and Torcida halted play, and play stretched 14 minutes past the 90. Hajduk's Spanish coach Gonzalo García summed up the mood afterwards: his team, he said, had heart, and that made the difference.

For visitors, the Eternal Derby is one of European football's great atmospheres — Poljud sits right by the Adriatic, its canopied stands a Split landmark since the 1979 Mediterranean Games, and the Torcida ultras behind one goal rank among the continent's most passionate. Anyone planning a Croatian trip around the derby should note the fixture calendar (usually autumn and spring meetings with Dinamo) and book early, as these nights sell out the 30,000-plus capacity despite the weather. Split itself rewards the rest of a long weekend: Diocletian's Palace, the Riva waterfront and ferries to the islands are all a short walk from the stadium.
