Football tourism is heading to the Bosphorus. Istanbul will stage the 2027 Spanish Super Cup, the first time Spain's four-team season opener leaves Saudi Arabia in its current format, with matches running from February 2 to 7.
The line-up is as starry as it gets: Real Madrid face Real Sociedad in the first semifinal on February 2 at Chobani Stadium, Fenerbahçe's ground on the Asian side of the city. A day later, Barcelona take on Atletico Madrid at Beşiktaş's stadium. The final lands on February 6 at Galatasaray's Rams Park, meaning visitors get to sample three of Istanbul's big club stadiums in one trip. Broadcasters in more than 150 countries will carry the tournament, and the Turkish Football Federation is treating it as a showcase following the city's recent UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals.
Why the change of venue? The Spanish federation's president Rafael Louzan told Reuters it came down to a calendar clash: Saudi Arabia hosts the Asian Cup on dates that overlap with the Super Cup, so the 2027 edition was moved. Security worries in the region played no part, he said, and financial terms are broadly unchanged from the Saudi deal. Talks are also under way to extend the Saudi hosting agreement beyond 2030, so this may be a one-off window to see the competition in Europe.
For football fans, the appeal is obvious. Mbappé in a Real Madrid shirt and Lamine Yamal pulling strings for Barcelona, all within a few metro rides of each other, in early February when Istanbul's hotels are at their quietest and cheapest. Add the city's own draw: Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks, legendary breakfast spreads and neighbourhoods like Karaköy and Kadıköy that live and breathe football culture. It's a rare chance to combine a winter city break with knockout football featuring Spain's biggest clubs.
Expect demand from Spanish fans travelling over for a long weekend, so booking flights and match tickets early will matter. The staggered schedule (semifinals on consecutive days, the final on the Saturday) makes a four- or five-night trip feasible for anyone wanting to catch the whole tournament.
