Kyoto's luxury hotel scene is about to get another serious contender. Shangri-La Group has announced Songtei Kyoto, the second property in its ultra-luxury Signatures collection and the brand's first in Japan, set to welcome its first guests from late 2026.
The address is the kind luxury travellers chase: directly opposite Nijō Castle, the UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1603 and tied to Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate that ruled Japan for over two centuries. The hotel itself sits on the former residence of the Kyoto Shoshidai, the shogunate's senior representative in the city — a history that will shape a design inspired by the grandeur of Edo-period residences.
Songtei Kyoto will be intimate by design: 77 rooms and suites, many positioned to frame views of the castle's Kita Ote-mon (Great North Gate) and surrounding gardens. Exact room categories and outlooks haven't been confirmed yet, so anyone booking early should hold off on promising themselves a castle view until the details land.
The Signatures concept leans into small, residential-style properties with highly personalised hosting. Here that translates to a wellness line-up including a private spa, indoor and outdoor hot baths, an indoor pool and a gym — ideal for recovering between temple-hopping sessions. Dining plans cover four outlets: an all-day lounge, a Chinese fine dining restaurant, a kappo-sushi counter and a small evening bar. Restaurant names and menus are still under wraps.
It's worth knowing that the property will open in stages. First guests arrive in late 2026, but the complete hotel — all dining, bathing and spa facilities — won't be fully unveiled until early 2027. Songtei follows The Silk Lakehouse in Hangzhou, which launched the Signatures collection in May 2025 beside West Lake.
