Sydney's cruise season is revving up, and the harbour city remains Australia's undisputed cruise capital — one of the busiest homeports anywhere in the world. Carnival Splendor and Carnival Adventure sail year-round from Sydney, but things really kick into gear between October and March, when nearly every major line — Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, Norwegian, Regent and more — sends a ship to town.

Before picking a sailing, know the terminal basics. Sydney has two: the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay, which handles most departures, and White Bay in Rozelle. Double-check which one yours leaves from. OPT is a two-minute train ride from Central Station via Circular Quay station — often faster than driving through CBD traffic. Arrive at least two hours before departure, note there's no long-term parking at OPT (nearby options are pricey, so take the train), and download your travel documents — terminal wi-fi is patchy. Coles and IGA stores nearby are handy for last-minute supplies.

On the deals front, value hunters are well served. Carnival has a nine-day Vanuatu and New Caledonia Christmas cruise departing 17 December 2027 from $1,949 — remarkably cheap for a festive sailing, at just over $200 a night. Its 10-day New Zealand roundtrip on Carnival Splendor starts at $1,672, undercutting most rivals on that route, and a 14-day repositioning cruise to Singapore in January 2027 costs from $1,683 with stops at Airlie Beach, Darwin, Benoa and Lombok.

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas offers a four-day Hobart escape from $1,198, a nine-day South Pacific loop from $1,649 (well under $200 a day), and 10-day New Zealand itineraries from $2,699 — worth doing now, before the line shifts focus to Vanuatu's Lelepa in future seasons. Norwegian Spirit delivers arguably the best per-night value of the lot: an 11-day Australia roundtrip in December 2026 from $1,487, just over $100 a night, calling at Hobart, Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Melbourne.

Further upmarket, Princess has an eight-day Tasmania sailing from $2,244 including stops at Eden and Port Arthur, and a 17-day epic from Sydney to Perth in April 2027 from $4,848 via Broome and Darwin. Celebrity Edge's 11-day Great Barrier Reef cruise works out at just over $200 a night, while Holland America's Westerdam specialises in one-way Sydney-to-Auckland New Zealand crossings from $2,800.

At the luxury end, Oceania Riviera's 12-day Queensland itinerary is discounted up to 50 per cent, from $3,920. Regent Seven Seas Explorer sails Sydney to Darwin from $11,099, Silversea's Silver Moon departs on Valentine's Day 2027 for an 18-day run to Singapore from $13,328, and Viking Orion's 32-day full lap of Australia — including Komodo and Bali — is still available from $23,595 despite sailing in December.

Who's this for? Anyone booking an Australian or South Pacific cruise this summer, from budget families to luxury loyalists. The standouts by value are Carnival's New Zealand fares and NCL's sub-$110-a-night Aussie circuit.
