American Airlines has quietly made one of the more generous moves in US lounge dining. Since September 15, business class passengers on qualifying Flagship routes can book into the sit-down restaurants inside the Flagship lounges at Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami — spaces that were previously reserved for first class only. Los Angeles is expected to follow when its dining room, closed since March 2020, reopens later this year.
Eligibility matters: it covers long-haul international, premium transcontinental and Flagship Hawaii business class tickets. Elite status alone won't get you a table — you need to be flying one of those premium cabins.
The trade-off is that a genuinely exclusive experience is now shared. Flagship First Dining was arguably the best lounge meal in the country precisely because it was quiet and nearly empty. That era is over. The menu has been rebuilt for volume — four starters, five mains, a black bean burger option — with dishes like a brisket-chuck blend DFW burger, a crab cake, smoked beef filet with sweet corn poblano purée, and vegetarian stuffed eggplant roulades. Local sourcing is flagged too, with beef from Corpus Christi and cheese from Texas producers.
The wine list is where American is making its statement. The headliner is Bollinger La Grande Année 2018, a prestige champagne retailing around $200, poured free alongside KHK Hillside Cabernet (about $125), Chateau Montelena Chardonnay (roughly $83) and Donum Estate Carneros Pinot Noir. Delta charges extra for reserve wines of this calibre in its lounges; American is including them. One quirk to know: the signature cranberry orange spritz mixes that same La Grande Année with rosé, cranberry and Cointreau — order the champagne neat instead.
Cocktails run from a Jack Daniel's Flagship Lemonade to a maple old fashioned, plus two non-alcoholic options. Compared with Delta One's dining rooms — hamachi crudo at JFK, sushi in Los Angeles — the food is simpler, and the main risk is capacity. American's dining rooms were built for a trickle of first class flyers, and evening departure banks could mean waits for a table.
Still, for anyone with a business class ticket on a long American international or transcontinental flight, this is a free proper restaurant meal and a serious glass of champagne before boarding. Arrive early and book your slot as soon as you clear the lounge doors.
