Bilt Rewards has quietly added a new transfer partner that train fans have wanted for years: Amtrak Guest Rewards. As of September 23, you can move Bilt points into Amtrak points at a 2:1 ratio, with transfers that post almost instantly. It's a small but notable opening, because Amtrak's programme has long been one of the hardest major loyalty schemes to top up from outside.
For a decade, none of the big bank programmes — American Express, Chase, Citi, Capital One or Wells Fargo — have allowed transfers into Amtrak. The only real loophole was Audience Rewards ShowPoints, earned through theatre ticket purchases and capped at 50,000 points a year. Old workarounds via Choice, Wyndham or a JetBlue-Points.com hack are all gone. That makes Bilt the first mainstream programme to open a door in.
Is it a great deal? It's fine, not amazing. Amtrak ties award prices closely to cash fares rather than using a fixed chart, and a point is worth roughly 2.67 cents in train travel. At 2:1, that works out to about 1.33 cents per Bilt point — only marginally better than simply booking through Bilt's own travel portal. A transfer bonus on a future Rent Day would change the maths considerably.
Still, there are smart uses. Acela first class upgrade coupons start at 2,500 Amtrak points (5,000 Bilt), applied within 12 hours of departure — worthwhile when the cash upgrade would cost $150 or more, though last-minute paid upgrades are often cheap. Small transfers also make sense to top off an award, and redemptions start at just 400 points all-in, or 100 points with points-and-cash. For the ambitious, points can go towards a sleeper room on a long-haul route like the California Zephyr, with meals and station lounge access included — though don't expect old-style fixed-price zone awards.
Two housekeeping points worth knowing. Amtrak points expire after 24 months of inactivity, and a Bilt transfer resets that clock — handy for occasional riders. And if you hold an Amtrak credit card, its 5% rebate on points redeemed for Amtrak travel applies to Bilt-transferred points too, softening the 2:1 loss.
For everyday earning, a Bilt card can out-earn Amtrak's own cards — Palladium tier members can clear 3 points per dollar, equivalent to 1.5 Amtrak points — though Amtrak's Preferred card offers tier qualifying points on spend, which matters if you're chasing status. For most travellers, Bilt's strength remains its broader airline and hotel partners, where transfer bonuses of up to 125% regularly appear.
If you ride the Northeast Corridor even occasionally, this gives you a fresh way to fund upgrades or keep a dormant balance alive without buying points.
