Florida has competition. Camden County, deep in Missouri's Ozarks, ranks as the state's second-best place to retire according to Stacker, and it's easy to see why. Around 30% of its 44,000 residents are 65 or older, Missouri has one of the lowest costs of living in the country, and the state doesn't tax Social Security. That combination of affordability and community is pulling seniors away from the usual sunbelt playbook.
The county's centrepiece is the Lake of the Ozarks — 54,000 acres of water and 1,150 miles of shoreline. Boating, swimming and fishing (bass, catfish and crappie are the draws for visiting anglers) keep life active, but there's plenty of shoreline for anyone who'd rather just sit and look at the water.
Two state parks make the outdoors a daily option rather than an occasional trip. Lake of the Ozarks State Park, the largest in Missouri, covers 89 miles of shoreline with two swimming beaches, 12 trails for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding, and the Ozark Caverns — home to a strange geological feature called Angel Showers, a constant curtain of water falling from the cave ceiling. Ha Ha Tonka State Park, near Camdenton, spans 3,600 acres with 16 miles of trails, one of Missouri's largest natural springs, and the remains of a stone castle on a bluff with sweeping views over the lake.
Where you settle matters. Osage Beach, the largest town, is the practical hub — it has the county's only hospital, Lake Regional Health System, plus the Osage Beach Outlet Marketplace and live shows at the Main Street Music Hall, which has been running since 1987. Camdenton offers a quieter, small-town feel with local shops and family-run spots like RJ's Family Restaurant, and the Ozarks Amphitheater, billed by state tourism as the best live music venue in Missouri. Sunrise Beach leans more resort-style: Timberlake Village is a large senior community on a no-wake cove, so you get lake views without boat noise, and the Sunrise Beach Community Center runs a full calendar of classes and events for meeting people.
One caveat worth planning around: Lake Regional is the county's only hospital, so proximity to Osage Beach may matter depending on your health needs. But for anyone priced out of Florida who still wants water at the doorstep, trails within a short drive and neighbours in the same stage of life, Camden County is a genuinely convincing alternative — a slower Midwestern pace with an unusually big backyard.
