Winter kit decisions just got simpler. Outdoor brand CAMEL — a US-based company that traces its roots to Italian craftsmanship over six decades back — has launched the Volcanic Shell Pro 3-in-1, a jacket built as two pieces that work alone or together.
The idea is familiar to anyone who's layered for a cold-weather trip: an insulated puffy plus a waterproof shell. Here, the inner layer is a lightweight down jacket filled with 90 percent high-loft goose down, with elastic cuffs and a high neck, designed to hold heat in subzero camp conditions while still breathing on easy cold-weather hikes.
The outer shell is where the specs get interesting. It's fully seam-sealed with a waterproof rating of 22,000+ mmH2O — enough for sustained downpours and heavy snow — and CAMEL hit that number without fluorine-based chemistry. That matters because fluorinated treatments are so-called forever chemicals that persist in ecosystems and the human body, so skipping them makes this a rarer breed: high-performance waterproofing without the environmental baggage.
Breathability got attention too. The shell vents at a rate of at least 9000g per square metre over 24 hours, which addresses a genuinely miserable winter problem — sweating hard on a climb, then having that moisture chill you to the bone once you stop. The faster sweat moves out, the warmer you stay at rest.
On the practical side, the shell comes with a storm-flapped zip, Velcro wrist cuffs, a roomy hood and a cinch-cord collar and hem to shut out wind and spindrift. Storage includes two flap drop-in pockets and two zipped ones. Zip the down liner into the shell and you've got one jacket rated for the coldest, wettest, sloppiest days of the season; separate them and you've got a puffy for dry cold and a rain shell for the rest.
For travellers, the appeal is packing efficiency. A modular 3-in-1 covers alpine city breaks, shoulder-season treks and wet winter weekends without forcing you to choose between a down jacket and a rain shell in your bag. If your winter trip spans both a snowy mountain and a rainy coast, one purchase can plausibly do the whole job — and the fluorine-free waterproofing gives it an edge for anyone trying to make their gear kit a little cleaner.
