Skip Orlando, forget Boston. A 2026 StorageCafe study ranking America's 100 largest metros for retirees has crowned Cape Coral-Fort Myers on Florida's Gulf Coast as the top place in the country for Boomers to settle down. The analysis pulled data from the U.S. Census Bureau, FBI, Cost of Living Index and Zillow, weighing finances, home prices, weather and life expectancy to score each city on retiree concentration, quality of retired life and opportunities for the golden years.
The twin cities flanking the Caloosahatchee River make a strong case. Nearly 30% of metro residents are 65 or older, and average daily temperatures sit just under 74°F — no small thing with more than 11,000 Americans turning 65 every day in 2025 and many of them hunting for warmth. Florida, for what it's worth, owns the entire top 70 of NOAA's warmest-city rankings.
Cape Coral is the quirkier half of the pair: a coastal city laced with more than 400 miles of canals, many with direct or indirect Gulf access. Sailboat owners can motor straight to the Gulf of Mexico, while those on freshwater canals get calmer waters for kayaking, paddleboarding and bass fishing. Golfers have Coral Oaks, an 18-hole championship course wrapped around lakes.
Across the river, Fort Myers came out as the favourite of nearly 20% of respondents in a Florida for Boomers survey. It stacks up golf courses, beaches, restaurants and shops, plus a deep bench of 55-plus communities. One example, Valencia Harbor, bundles tennis, pickleball and bocce courts with pools, a gym and social nights built around art and wine. Grandkids visiting? Brightwater Lagoon offers swimming, sandy beaches, an obstacle course and water sports in a family-friendly setting.
The catch is cost. Neither city is wildly expensive, but BestPlaces data shows comfortable living in either one costs more than both the national and Florida averages. Retirees on a tight budget should run the numbers before packing up — but for those who can swing it, the metro now has a study to back up its postcard appeal.
Why it matters for travellers: even if retirement isn't on your radar, the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area works as a winter sun escape. The same canals, beaches and golf courses that attract retirees make it a laid-back alternative to Florida's pricier Gulf hotspots like Naples or Sarasota.
