Cooler weather has arrived in Dubai, and with it the best few months of the year to be outside. The good news for anyone watching their wallet: plenty of the city's best seasonal outings cost next to nothing.
Cheapest of all is the abra, the motorised wooden boat that has ferried people between Deira and Bur Dubai across Dubai Creek for generations. Rides run daily from 6am to midnight and cost a single dirham – about 20 pence – making it arguably the best-value sightseeing in the city. For something equally inexpensive but slower-paced, the Love Lakes at Al Qudra are free to visit. Pack a picnic, time it for golden hour, and you may spot flamingos and swans on the water.
Culture lovers have two free options. Alserkal Avenue in Al Qouz is Dubai's main arts district, packed with galleries showing local and international work, plus cafes and workshops; it opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. Across town in Old Dubai, the Al Fahidi district is a cluster of narrow lanes, old souqs and small museums that preserve a slice of the city pre-skyscrapers. It's open daily, 7am to 8pm, and wandering costs nothing.
Active types can rent a bike through the Careem app and cycle along Kite Beach in Jumeirah from Dhs25, with food stalls and beach activities along the route. If you'd rather be on the water than beside it, kayaking or rowing at Hatta Dam starts at the same Dhs25, with sessions daily from 7am to 9pm in the Hajar mountains outside the city.
Eating and shopping on the cheap is covered too. The Last Exit food-truck stops – found at Al Khawaneej, Jebel Ali and Al Qudra, handy if you're driving towards Abu Dhabi – are open round the clock with snacks from Dhs15, including outlets like Saddle and Joe & the Juice. For a proper local ritual, grab a karak chai at Koukh Al Shay, a cult cafeteria chain with more than 70 UAE branches, where tea starts at Dhs1.50 and it never closes. Bookworms should seek out Bookends, reportedly the UAE's largest bookstore, started in 2020 by two mums to make reading affordable and sustainable – books start at Dhs5 and you can sell your old ones back for cash.
One for the adults: SoBe at W Dubai – The Palm runs a complimentary ladies' night every Wednesday from 8pm to 11pm, with unlimited selected drinks, a live DJ and views over Palm Jumeirah.
Taken together, these ten outings show a different side of Dubai to the one the resort bills suggest – one where a dirham buys you a boat ride and a mountain lake costs nothing but the drive. Best of all, the cooler-season window from roughly November to March is exactly when locals make the most of it, so travellers visiting in those months can do the same without sweating or overspending.
