Lagos has long been one of the Algarve's most likeable towns — a historic centre wrapped around Praça Infante Dom Henrique, marina views, and enough cafés to keep you caffeinated for a week. But this October, there's another reason to swing by: a run of community events at the Armazém Regimental in the town square, all raising money for local animal rescue work.

The venue has become a small hub this month, mixing art, crafts and books with a charitable twist. Saturday, October 10 at 5pm sees local writer Carlos Filipe presenting his new book, (Im)Perfect Friends. There's a bittersweet backstory: the cat on the cover, Sandy, was a Lagos street cat being treated for cancer, and she died not long after the cover photo was taken. The space stays open until October 14, so if you're in town that week, it's worth popping in — 2027 calendars are also on sale, with proceeds going to the rescue effort.

If downward dog with actual dogs sounds like your kind of afternoon, Harmony Yoga with Nadine is running a puppy yoga session on Sunday, October 11, again in support of the shelter. Details are posted on In Harmony Lagos's social media pages.

The wider fundraising push has already produced serious results. Over a recent weekend, around 30 volunteers stationed themselves at the Continente supermarkets in Lagos and Odiáxere for the Banco Solidário Animal collection. Shoppers answered the call in a big way: the haul came to 1,634kg of dog food, 595kg of cat food and 258kg of cat litter. That's a lot of meals for the dogs and cats at the shelter, which counts on donations like these for its day-to-day running. Organisers flagged Animalife and the SONAE/Continente group as key supporters of the campaign.

For travellers, this is the kind of thing that makes a stay in Lagos feel less like a fly-in-and-out beach trip. The Algarve has plenty of street animals and small charities working with tight budgets, and visitors who show up to an event, buy a calendar or even just share the word are contributing something real to the place they're enjoying. It's also a nice excuse to see Praça Infante Dom Henrique, a square most people only cross on the way to the water.

The message from the organisers is simple: there's more than one way to help this month. Attend something at the Armazém Regimental before it closes on October 14, join a fundraising session, buy a calendar, or spread the word online. Every bit goes toward keeping the shelter's animals fed and rehomed.
