The Zetter Collection, the London group behind cult stays like The Zetter Clerkenwell and The Zetter Bloomsbury, is crossing borders for the first time. Its new property, The Zetter 717 Amsterdam, is set to open in early 2027 on Prinsengracht, one of the most photographed canals in the Dutch capital.

The hotel will be small by design: just 24 bedrooms inside a canal house with serious pedigree. The main building dates to 1810 and was built in the Empire style, while the rear structure goes back further still, to the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. It sits within the UNESCO-listed Canal District, so expect classic gabled facades rather than any glossy new-build.

Design duties have gone to James Thurstan Waterworth, the award-winning designer whose studio Thurstan also handled The Zetter Bloomsbury — a firm signal the brand intends to carry its house style abroad intact. The look layers aged brass, reclaimed timber, antique mirrors and rich textiles, aiming for interiors that feel collected over decades rather than installed last year.

Two shared spaces will shape the stay. The Garden Room is a botanical, conservatory-style breakfast spot looking onto a private garden — a genuine luxury in central Amsterdam. The Library, meanwhile, is the evening option: book-lined walls in rust and burnt-terracotta tones, reclaimed oak and aged brass, serving drinks and small bites in an intimate setting.

The property has history as a well-liked local address — Managing Director Kevin Rockey described 717 as a building beloved by Amsterdammers — and the group is positioning the opening as joining a neighbourhood rather than parachuting in. Ground-level leadership will come from General Manager Yara Al Hattouni, an Amsterdam local whose city knowledge is meant to steer the guest experience.

Why it matters: The Zetter's London hotels have long been the kind travellers recommend by name — characterful, comfortable and never corporate — so a Dutch outpost gives canal-district fans a fresh alternative to Amsterdam's big-name chains. With only 24 rooms and a location on a prime canal, early bookings for 2027 will likely be competitive once reservations open.
