Most World Tourism Day celebrations amount to a ribbon-cutting. Loulé, in the Algarve's interior, is doing something better: throwing open the doors of its creative workshops and letting visitors try the crafts themselves — for free.
The Portuguese town's Loulé Criativo network runs Open Days from September 26 to October 6, with sessions covering everything from palm-leaf weaving and pottery to cyanotype printing and filigree. Almost everything costs nothing to join. The single exception is a guided tour of Palácio Gama Lobo and the workshop network on September 26 at 2.30pm, which needs advance registration by email.
The line-up is genuinely varied. Early sessions focus on textiles and sewing at Palácio Gama Lobo, plus a traditional palm-weaving gathering at Cerca do Convento Espírito Santo. September 28 brings woodwork with maker Wesley Sacardi and open workshops in empreita — the classic Algarve technique of weaving dwarf palm leaves — run with artisans from Casa da Empreita. That evening there's also a talk on how making things by hand can support children's confidence and development.
After that come pottery (including a session just for kids), botanical printing, hand tapestry, dyeing with onion skins, jewellery and esparto grass work. October 2 ends with a round table on where handicrafts fit in modern life. The busiest day is October 3, when Palácio Gama Lobo hosts fig-based creations, corda seca ceramics, collective embroidery, filigree and linocut printing all in one place. A guided tour of the Palma Esparto e Cana exhibition, with some of the artists present, closes the programme on October 6.
There's a bigger story behind the timing. On September 25, Loulé Council, the Algarve Tourism Board and CCDR Algarve will sign a memorandum backing the town's bid to become Portuguese Capital of Culture in 2028 — so this fortnight doubles as a showcase of what Loulé would bring to that title.
