Ness Point in Lowestoft, Suffolk, is the easternmost spot in England — which means this unassuming seaside town sees the country's first sunrise each day. It's a nice bit of trivia, but the real draw is a classic British seaside break that costs a fraction of a trip to better-known coastal resorts, and sits under an hour from Norwich by direct train or bus.
The town splits its beach offering into three distinct personalities. Pakefield, on the southern edge, is the rugged, dog-friendly option: golden sand scattered with pebbles, decent conditions for kitesurfing and paddleboarding, and the occasional horse rider at the water's edge. The trade-off is minimal facilities — no toilets and no regular lifeguard cover, so plan ahead. Fifteen minutes' walk north, South Beach is the family workhorse, with public toilets, showers, seasonal lifeguards, jet-ski and windsurf hire, and a seafront lined with colourful beach huts. It held Blue Flag status until 2016, and dogs are banned between May and September. Corton Beach, north of town, is the quietest of the three — reached by stairs, popular with anglers and swimmers, and still informally used by naturists despite losing its official designation.
When hunger strikes, the food scene punches above its weight for a town this size. The Jolly Sailors (4.5 stars on Google) does fish and chips, Sunday roasts and a Cajun-spiced scotch egg right on the seafront, with reviewers praising fast, friendly service. For something different, Lowestoft Tandoori serves Indian and Bangladeshi dishes and picked up a 2025 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award, known locally for generous portions and complimentary extras.
The wildcard attraction is Pleasurewood Hills, named the UK's best theme park in its category (under one million visitors) at the 2026 UK Theme Park Awards. The Jolly Roger tower ride drops from 131 feet at up to 60 mph for thrill-seekers, while the Water Fun Factory keeps younger kids happy, and sea lion and bird displays round out a full day.
Stays range from small hotels — Baytree House, The Clyffe, The Hotel Victoria, The Hatfield — to plenty of Airbnb options. And while Lowestoft works as a destination in its own right, it also makes a brilliant day trip if you're based in Norwich, whose cathedral, lanes and UNESCO City of Stories credentials pair nicely with a salty afternoon by the sea. Great Yarmouth is a short hop up the coast if you want to extend the itinerary.
