A new partnership wants your next cruise to end with you healthier than when you boarded. VIKAND, a maritime healthcare company that already staffs and runs medical operations across the cruise industry, has teamed up with spa and wellness pioneer Anna Bjurstam to launch Marenia — a medical wellness concept designed to run on the infrastructure every cruise ship already has.
The idea is clever in its simplicity. Ships carry doctors, nurses, labs and full medical centres anyway, but those facilities usually sit in standby mode for emergencies. Marenia repurposes them for guests: same-day blood panels analysed onboard, glucose monitoring, metabolic and fitness testing, IV hydration, vitamin shots, and personalised programmes aimed at wellness and healthy ageing. A functional medicine and longevity doctor reviews your results and builds a personal plan for the voyage and beyond.
There's a governance angle too. Everything runs under VIKAND's clinical protocols, with a dedicated Marenia nurse embedded in the ship's medical team — so you're getting regulated medical care, not just a spa add-on with a health halo. The ship's regular spa keeps operating alongside it; Marenia takes only the treatments that genuinely need medical oversight, and regenerative therapies may be added where appropriate. Because it leans on existing facilities, cruise lines can offer this without building a single new room.
Bjurstam's pitch is about time rather than technology. A sea day gives people the rare combination of downtime and curiosity about their own health, and the programme is designed to produce changes that stick after disembarkation. VIKAND CEO Peter Hult frames it as responsibly redeploying clinical capability that has always been there for illness and injury.
For now, Marenia will pilot with selected cruise operators before rolling out across the international market. If you're the kind of traveller who books longevity retreats, tracks biomarkers, or simply wants more from a sea day than a massage, watch which lines sign up first — this could become a genuine differentiator when choosing between similar itineraries.
