Monte Rei Golf & Country Club has switched its championship North Course back on. The Jack Nicklaus Signature design near Vila Nova de Cacela reopened in September after roughly six months of closure, the most visible step yet in a wider investment push at the eastern Algarve resort.
The scale of the work was serious. Greens were rebuilt, bunkers fully renovated and several tees widened. The irrigation system and pumping station were upgraded, buggy paths improved, and the practice area got a new tee plus modern training technology. Greenkeeping teams worked alongside Nicklaus Design throughout, with a clear brief: restore the course to how it was intended, not redesign it. Dirk Bouts, senior designer at Nicklaus Design, said the intervention has returned the course to the standard originally envisaged, with extensive clearance work across the property adding to the polish. The resort has also bought quieter, more sustainable maintenance kit.
The timing matters. Monte Rei opened nearly two decades ago and built a reputation as one of Portugal's finest courses, but even celebrated designs need surgery eventually. Co-CEO Nuno Sepúlveda of DETAILS — the hospitality group overseeing the investment — stressed that the goal was renewal rather than reinvention, and that the work should protect the course for a new generation of golfers.
There's more coming beyond the fairways. Monte Rei has announced plans for a 100-room Nobu hotel with a signature restaurant and branded residences, which would dramatically raise the resort's hospitality profile. Even now, the estate is more than a golf course: it has apartments and villas, restaurants, a heated pool, gym and tennis courts set in the hills above the coast.
For travelling golfers, the practical takeaway is simple: the Algarve's headline course is back in prime condition just as the region's best golfing weather arrives. Autumn and spring offer warm, calm days without summer crowds, and the eastern Algarve around Tavira and Cacela Velha is a quieter, more authentically Portuguese corner of the region than the resort strip further west. If you've played Monte Rei before, the restored greens and presentation are reason enough for a return trip; if you haven't, a Nicklaus design freshly brought back to its best is a strong excuse to book that first round.
