MSC's newest flagship has passed its final tests. MSC World Asia, the third LNG-powered ship in the line's World class, completed sea trials off the French Atlantic coast this week, running checks on engines, manoeuvrability, fuel efficiency, safety systems, speed and stopping distances. The ship now heads to the Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard in Saint-Nazaire for final fit-out, with delivery scheduled for 25 November 2026 and a naming ceremony in Le Havre at the end of that month. Revenue sailings begin in December.
It will be MSC's 24th ship, joining sisters MSC World Europa and MSC World America as the third in the fleet to run on liquefied natural gas — a cleaner-burning fuel that has become the standard for the line's biggest new builds. Capacity tops out at 6,782 guests, putting it firmly in mega-ship territory.
The headline gimmick is a dragon: a sculpture 12 metres long and nine metres wide, suspended 10 metres above the World Promenade. Around it, the ship is divided into seven themed districts — Family Aventura, Zen Area, Aqua Deck, The Terraces, Galleria, Promenade and the ship-within-a-ship MSC Yacht Club — so passengers can pick their own pace, from kids' chaos to quiet corners.
Thrill-seekers get two standout attractions carried over or upgraded from sister ships. The Harbour, an outdoor park first seen on MSC World America, includes a Cliffhanger swing ride that swings riders 50 metres above the ocean. Then there's The Spiral @ Tree of Life, billed as the longest dry slide at sea: 81.3 metres of drop cascading across 12 decks.
Food and drink run to 40 venues. Highlights include a Clubhouse and Soda Bar styled on 1980s and 1990s nostalgia, and a Pan Asian Bar pouring street food-inspired cocktails alongside a house draught beer called Oceanic Asian.
Once in service, the ship will run seven-night Mediterranean loops calling at Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Messina and Valletta — a genuinely strong port list covering Spain, France, Italy and Malta in one week. Fares start from £630 per person, which is competitive for a brand-new mega-ship on a Western Med itinerary.
Why it matters: if you've been curious about the new generation of mega-ships but want a classic Mediterranean route rather than a Caribbean one, MSC World Asia is essentially World America's technology with European ports. Families get the slides and the kids' districts; couples and cruise veterans can retreat to the Yacht Club or the Zen Area.
