Before Brexit, British passports came with a cheeky little bonus: renew up to nine months early and that leftover validity got rolled onto your new passport. Those days are gone. Since the UK became a 'third country' on 31 January 2020, EU border rules count validity strictly from the date of issue — so a passport you assumed had a few spare months may actually be worthless for a European trip.

The Schengen rules are the main trap. Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay plus at least three months beyond it, and the total validity can't stretch past 10 years from issue. In practice, a freshly issued 10-year passport is only good for EU travel until it hits nine years and nine months old. Miss that detail and you could be turned away at the gate after paying for the holiday — and travel insurance won't cover you, because airlines and insurers treat document validity as the passenger's responsibility.

It's not just Europe. Plenty of long-haul favourites are stricter than you'd expect. The Maldives, Dubai, Turkey and Israel all want six months of validity from your arrival date. India asks for 180 days from arrival, and it, South Africa, Kenya and Madagascar all expect two blank pages in your passport for visas. Costa Rica is the outlier in the other direction — Britons need just one day of validity beyond their departure date. The Foreign Office lists entry requirements for every destination, so it's worth a quick check before you book anything.

If your passport is close to the line, renewal is straightforward but not instant. The standard online renewal costs £102 and HMPO suggests allowing three weeks. Need it faster? A one-week fast-track service costs a £90 premium and requires a personal appointment — this is also the route if your passport is lost or stolen. And if it's a genuine emergency, a one-day service exists for adult renewals at £137.50 on top of the standard fee.

The practical takeaway is simple: look at the issue date, not just the expiry date, before booking a European trip. If your passport is more than nine and a half years old, renew before you pay for anything. For the rest of the world, run through the destination's specific rules on validity and blank pages. Five minutes of checking beats losing a holiday and the money you paid for it.
