Long before Watt and Newcomen made steam famous, a Spanish nobleman named Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont was already putting it to work. Born in 1553 at Guendulain in Navarre, Ayanz served as a page to King Felipe II, fought in military campaigns across Europe, and eventually landed a job managing royal mines — a post that turned him into one of history's most underrated inventors.

Mines in the sixteenth century had two deadly problems: foul air and flooding. Ayanz attacked both. His siphon-and-exchanger drainage system used contaminated washing water to lift floodwater out of the galleries, an early practical use of atmospheric pressure decades before the principle was formally described. He then went further, building a steam-powered pressure pump that pushed water up and out through a pipe. It was successfully trialled at the silver mines of Guadalcanal in southern Spain — a demonstration that predates the better-known British steam machines by decades, in some cases by more than a century.

Air quality got the same treatment. Ayanz designed ventilation systems to circulate fresh air through tunnels, and even cooled air by passing it over snow before sending it underground — something modern scholars have called an early form of air conditioning.

Then there was the water. In 1602, before an audience that included the royal court, a diver wearing Ayanz's suit — complete with a system for renewing the air supply — reportedly spent about an hour underwater in the Pisuerga River. He also sketched out submersible boats for exploration and salvage, ideas far beyond the technology of his day.

His output was staggering. In 1606, King Philip III granted him patents for 48 separate inventions, among them an improved metallurgical furnace, arch dam designs, new windmills, irrigation pumps, a device for measuring magnetic declination, and roller mills. He died in 1613 after a long illness, and per his wishes his remains ended up in Murcia — you can still find his tomb in the Capilla del Socorro, in the ambulatory of Murcia Cathedral.

So why did history forget him? Largely because his work stayed inside the Spanish monarchy, was rarely publicised abroad, and was later steamrolled by the British industrial narrative. Outside Spain, and even within it, his name only really circulates among historians of science.

For travellers, this is a good excuse to look at Spain beyond the usual highlights. Murcia Cathedral is an easy add-on to any southern Spain itinerary, and knowing that an Elizabethan-era polymath is buried in one of its side chapels gives the visit an unexpected layer. History-minded visitors to Navarre can seek out Guendulain, his birthplace, in the hills near Pamplona. Ayanz may not have changed the world in his lifetime, but standing in front of his tomb, it's hard not to wonder how different the Industrial Revolution might have looked if his ideas had travelled further.
