A working Cape Dutch farm at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain has once again come out on top. Babylonstoren, in the Cape Winelands less than an hour from Cape Town International Airport, has been named South Africa's best hotel in Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Readers' Choice Awards — its fifth consecutive year holding the national number one spot. The results draw on more than 798,000 survey responses, so it's a serious vote of confidence from travellers who have actually been there.

What sets Babylonstoren apart is that it's a real farm first, hotel second. Its formal garden grows over 300 varieties of edible and medicinal plants, and whatever's in season shapes both the menus and the daily activities. Guests can join the morning harvest, cycle through vineyards and orchards, visit the water buffalo, or swim in a secluded mountain pool. The Garden Spa covers the wellness side, while Soetmelksvlei — a recreation of farm life as it was in 1897 — keeps traditional handcrafts alive.

Accommodation comes in several flavours: Garden Cottages right beside the formal garden, Fynbos Cottages tucked among indigenous vegetation and vineyards, Farmhouse Suites, and larger family houses. Farm-to-fork dining is the throughline — much of what lands on your plate was picked that morning, steps from the kitchen.

To celebrate the award, the farm is running an Award-Winning Stay package from 7 October to 30 November 2026. The two-night deal includes daily breakfast, farm activities and a complimentary transfer to that secluded mountain pool, where you get three hours to swim and take in the scenery. A Babylonstoren picnic can be added at extra cost.

For travellers, this is a useful signal. The Winelands has no shortage of polished wine-estate stays, but Babylonstoren keeps winning because it offers something more participatory than a pretty room — you can get your hands in the soil, then eat the results. It works equally well as a Cape Town add-on (it's an easy drive from the airport) or a base for exploring Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Book early if the autumn 2026 package appeals; award announcements tend to fill calendars fast.
