New York's favourite social wellness brand has crossed state lines. Bathhouse, the Brooklyn-born company that helped turn bathing culture into a social pastime for people who like their steam with good lighting and better company, has opened its first location outside New York City — and it chose the historic Bellevue hotel in Center City Philadelphia as its landing spot.
The new space is big: roughly 36,000 square feet spread over multiple floors, occupying what used to be a Tiffany & Co. store. Inside, bathers get three indoor pools, three thermal rooms — an infrared sauna, a dry sauna and a Russian-style banya — plus a steam room. The point isn't just to sweat quietly in a corner; Bathhouse built its name on communal bathing, where lingering between hot and cold with friends is the whole idea.
More is coming. Early next year the property will add a third-floor outdoor terrace, a genuinely unusual feature for Center City. It will hold an outdoor pool, a fourth sauna, lounge space and a concessions area — turning the complex into something closer to a rooftop resort than a gym spa.
The pairing makes sense for the hotel. The Bellevue already runs The Sporting Club, its fitness operation, and management sees Bathhouse's recovery expertise as a natural add-on: a tough workout upstairs, then heat, cold water and a lounge chair to finish. General manager Firas Ghorab framed it as part of a push to position the Bellevue as a luxury lifestyle destination not just for overnight guests but for locals too — which is good news for Philadelphians who don't want to book a room to access a world-class bathhouse.
For context, Bathhouse started in 2019 in Williamsburg and quickly became a defining name in American wellness, known for making the social bathhouse — long a fixture of cities like Budapest, Tokyo and Moscow — feel fresh and accessible in the US. The Philadelphia opening is the brand's first step beyond its home market, and a signal that serious bathing culture is spreading to mid-sized American cities.
Why should a traveller care? If you're heading to Philadelphia, it's a genuinely new reason to base yourself at or near The Bellevue: a post-museum or post-convention soak that rivals anything in New York, without the New York booking scramble.
