Sleep scores, heart rate, glucose, recovery — we already quantify our bodies from wrist to fingertip. The newest frontier in self-tracking is the organ running the whole show: the brain. Consumer EEG devices are moving out of clinics and onto bedside tables, and wellness-minded travellers are among the first to be targeted.
The pitch is simple. Electroencephalography, or EEG, has existed for roughly a century, but until recently it required gel, a trained technician and a quiet hospital room. Companies like Muse have cracked the harder problem of getting a usable signal from dry sensors worn at home. Muse's S Athena pairs EEG with blood-oxygen monitoring to score focus, stress and sleep, while its software translates brain activity into measures of cognitive performance and recovery. The behind-the-ear Atlas 1.0 tracks continuously and boils readings down to three metrics — Presence, Stress and Energy Burn. Neurosity's Crown goes further, using eight sensors, heart-rate variability biofeedback and red and near-infrared light therapy in personalised brain-training programmes, and can even hook its data up to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude.
Experts urge caution, though. Cognitive genetics specialist Irena Tyshyna warns that a constant stream of brain metrics can become a breeding ground for anxiety and hypochondria, especially when a messy electrical signal gets flattened into a tidy 'stress' score that looks more authoritative than it is. She sees a real role for EEG in longevity and wellness screening — but in the hands of trained professionals, with consumers understanding the limits. Muse itself insists its devices are neither medical tools nor mind readers, just a way to watch your own baseline shift over time.
Then there's the question almost nobody is asking yet: where does the brain data go? AI wellness expert Kelly Allison calls this one of the most significant unaddressed privacy frontiers, noting that brain data is categorically different from step counts — it's who you are at a neurological level. Muse says it has collected over a billion minutes of at-home brain data to train an AI model, with user opt-ins and no selling of individual data. Allison still wants users asking hard questions about ownership, consent and what inferences AI systems might draw that were never agreed to.
Why does this matter to travellers? Because longevity clinics, luxury spas and wellness retreats are already adding cognitive performance to the menu alongside cryotherapy and blood panels. If you're handed an EEG headband at a high-end retreat this year, it's worth knowing what the device can actually tell you, what it can't, and who gets to keep the data afterwards. The technology is genuinely promising — but as Tyshyna puts it, sometimes the most accurate reading comes from putting the gadget down and listening to your body.
The upshot: curiosity is fine, diagnosis-by-app is not, and brain data deserves a far higher threshold of scrutiny than the fitness data we've already been handing over for years.
