Catalina Island sits about an hour by ferry from Long Beach or Dana Point, but it feels a world away from the Southern California mainland. Bison roam the hills, the island fox is a local icon, and the water off Catalina is considered some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world. Now there's a financial nudge to go too. The Love Catalina Island Tourism Authority has launched two separate offers aimed at stretching a trip beyond a quick day visit.
The first, Second Summer Savings, runs for stays in October, November or February, with bookings made Sunday through Thursday. Book two nights at any of seven participating hotels and you get a third night free. The list includes the Pavilion Hotel, Mt Ada, the Glenmore Plaza Hotel, the Bellana Hotel, Hotel Atwater, Snug Harbor Inn and Hotel Metropole — a mix that spans the historic Avalon waterfront and more upscale options, so there's likely something for most budgets.
The second deal, Restore & Explore, trades on Catalina's conservation credentials. Book two nights at either the Catalina Island Inn or Catalina Canyon Inn and you'll get a guided eco-tour, an eco-conservation gift, and the chance to take part in hands-on activities such as seed collecting and invasive plant removal. One catch: this offer expires on October 27, so it only works for early-autumn trips.
Why stay overnight rather than do the classic day trip? Catalina rewards a slower pace. Beyond the hiking trails and dive sites, the island has a cult-favourite cocktail called the Buffalo Milk, spa treatments in Avalon, and enough restaurants and galleries to fill an easy extra day. The two-deal setup effectively lets travellers choose their bonus: a free night to laze on, or a conservation-flavoured package that gets you out into the island's famous ecology with guides who know it well.
The offers suit different travellers. Second Summer Savings is the obvious pick for couples or families who want a longer, cheaper escape and can travel midweek — the Sunday-to-Thursday booking window is the trade-off for the free night. Restore & Explore is better for anyone who'd rather come home with a story than a sunburn: planting seeds and clearing invasive species alongside island conservationists is a more memorable souvenir than a fridge magnet. Note that Restore & Explore involves just two hotels, so availability may be tighter.
Catalina isn't exactly a secret, but the shoulder-season pricing and the chance to see the island's wildlife without the summer shuffle make this autumn the moment to book.
