Chile packs glaciers, deserts, volcanoes and a 4,000km coastline into one skinny country — and its high-end hotel scene makes the most of every one of them. A recent Wanderlust feature rounds up where to splurge, and the shortlist spans the whole length of the nation.
Start in the Atacama, the driest desert on Earth and one of its best stargazing spots thanks to near-total clarity. Top hotels here — Nayara Alto Atacama and Tierra Atacama among them — pair private telescopes and astrophysicist-led dark-sky sessions with plunge pools and tasting menus matched to small-batch Chilean wines. Days are for 4x4 trips across the salt flats (flamingos included), sunrise at the Tatio geyser field — the world's third largest — and dips in mineral-rich lagoons, with llamas and alpacas for company along routes the crowds skip.
Across to the island-studded south, Refugia Chiloé sits on a hilltop on the Rilan peninsula, a geometric wooden-shingled building over the Pullao Wetland with 24 rooms, a heated spa and slippers knitted by local artisans. Private boats ferry you to the archipelago's secluded islands and their UNESCO-listed wooden churches.
The Lakes District, between the two, gets less attention than it deserves. Puerto Varas sits on Lake Llanquihue with Volcan Osorno looming over it, and five-star Hotel Awa — one of Chile's first B Corp-certified hotels — has a 300-square-metre spa and villa for total privacy. Nearby you can soak at Termas Martini, a slate-lined hot-spring complex built into a canyon near Villarrica National Park, or detour to the Petrohué waterfalls.
Patagonia is the big finish. Estancia Cerro Guido blends working-ranch life (gaucho rides, yerba mate masterclasses) with puma-tracking excursions and Torres del Paine trekking. Awasi Patagonia does private guiding with lavish picnics in the middle of nowhere; Tierra Patagonia can arrange heli-hiking or arrive-by-private-charter. And for the fjords of Tierra del Fuego, boutique expedition cruises with Australis or a private yacht charter get you to glaciers by Zodiac — whisky on ancient ice optional but traditional.
It's a strong pick for honeymoons and milestone trips: everything here is built around dramatic settings, and the top lodges take sustainability seriously without skimping on comfort. You won't see all four regions in one trip comfortably — pick a desert-and-stars break, a lakes-and-thermal-soaks week, or a Patagonia expedition, and save the rest for next time.
