New York State has far more to offer than its famous city, and one of its easiest surprises sits on the drive between Buffalo and Rochester. Corfu is a village of roughly 700 residents packed into less than a square mile, named after the Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It's about 30 miles from Buffalo and 49 from Rochester, which makes it a natural pit stop on a western New York road trip — and a legitimate destination in its own right thanks to one very big neighbour.
Food is Corfu's quiet strength. The Indian Falls Log Cabin Restaurant is the most scenic option, a gastropub perched beside a creek and waterfall that serves steaks, seafood, and Italian dishes alongside bar staples, with live music and events on its patio. Linda's Family Diner is the go-to for a solid handmade breakfast or lunch, while Solstice Cafe covers coffee, smoothies, and lighter fare. Pizza and wings fans should head to Homeslice 33 Pizzeria downtown.
Dessert might actually be the village's best claim to the table. Buttercrumbs Bakery holds a 4.7 Tripadvisor rating — the highest in town — for its cakes, pastries, cookies, and cupcakes, and Sprinkles Creamery matches that score on Yelp for ice cream and custard. If you're already working through Buffalo's Wing Trail, Corfu makes a good final stop for wings and a cone.
The real draw for many visitors is Six Flags Darien Lake, the largest theme park resort in New York State, sitting right by Corfu. Note that while Six Flags manages the property, it's owned by a separate company, so you won't find the chain's usual DC Comics or Looney Tunes branding. What you will find is a full resort: theme park, water park, campgrounds, and a hotel. The coaster line-up is the headliner — the Viper has been running for over four decades, and Ride of Steel remains the fastest roller coaster in the state, with a 205-foot drop and speeds above 70 mph. Family rides, kids' areas, and classics like the Pirate swinging ship round things out.
When the summer heat gets heavy, Hurricane Harbor water park is part of the same complex, with a wave pool, lazy river, and slides ranging from gentle to intense. Its season runs roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day, so plan accordingly if a soak is the point of the trip.
For travellers, Corfu works on two levels. Families doing a theme park weekend get lodging, campgrounds, and water slides in one spot. Road-trippers crossing between Buffalo's Art Deco architecture and Rochester's Erie Canal history get a genuinely good small-town lunch break. Either way, it's a reminder that western New York rewards getting off the interstate.
