The Maldives has had a good run on the awards circuit lately, and the latest batch of wins says something useful about where the country's resort scene is heading: away from the honeymoon-only stereotype and towards art, design-led luxury and proper family holidays.
JOALI Maldives, positioned as the country's first art-immersive resort, has held onto its One MICHELIN Key in the MICHELIN Guide's hotel programme. The island treats creativity as the organising principle of the whole stay — contemporary installations pop up around the grounds, guests can get hands-on at the Ceramics Studio, and the restaurants lean into storytelling and presentation as much as flavour. Wellbeing programming and a kids club built around Create, Play, Discover and Move round out an approach clearly aimed at multigenerational groups rather than just couples.
Design credentials also earned recognition at Finolhu, a Seaside Collection resort in Baa Atoll's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, named Best Design Resort in the Maldives at the Global Destination Awards run by World Fashion Channel. With 125 villas styled by London's Muza Lab — bold colours, expressive patterns, natural textures — plus a two-kilometre sandbank and the barefoot Crab Shack, Finolhu brands itself the "Island Playground", with visiting artists and a year-round programme of art, sport and entertainment.
Kandima Maldives took the Family Activities & Entertainment title at the UK's Family Traveller Awards 2026, decided by a journalist shortlist and thousands of public votes. Kandima has built its whole identity around making the Maldives work for families and groups: budget-spread room rates, the country's longest and fastest go-karting circuit (Fast Track), the PlaySpace hub with escape rooms and VR, a running club and farm-foraging tours. An Adventure Park bridging kids' play and adult recreation is in the works. General Manager Dermot Birchall framed it as balance — time together as a group, with room to slip away on your own.
Finally, boutique retreat .Here Baa Atoll won two categories at the AHEAD Asia 2026 awards, for Landscaping & Outdoor Spaces and Suite, from a record field of over 220 entries. Just nine residences spread across two private islands called Somewhere and Nowhere, with architecture by Christopher Chua of Kulör Group and interiors by Inge Moore of Muza Lab, designed to frame rather than compete with the lagoon, sky and horizon.
