Hurricane season doesn't care how new your ship is. Virgin Voyages' Brilliant Lady, currently running a short West Coast season, has altered its Mexican Riviera itinerary after Hurricane Rachel left heavy swell along the Baja coast.
The change affects the sailing that departed Los Angeles on October 3, 2026. Virgin had warned booked guests days earlier that adjustments were possible, and once the storm passed clear of the ship's route, the line confirmed the swap: Cabo San Lucas was replaced with Ensenada for the first port day on October 4. The reason is practical rather than dramatic — residual swell made tendering passengers ashore at Cabo unsafe and uncomfortable, and Cabo relies on tenders rather than a dock for cruise ships.
The rest of the cruise continues largely as advertised, with one tweak. After Ensenada, Brilliant Lady sails on to Mazatlán, though its arrival and departure there have shifted roughly two hours later. The ship is now due in at 11 AM and leaves for Puerto Vallarta at 8 PM. Cabo itself was scheduled later in the itinerary and remains on the plan.
Guests who booked Cabo excursions through Virgin don't need to do anything — those tours were automatically cancelled and refunds will go back to the original payment method.
There's a bit of context worth knowing here. Brilliant Lady spent the summer sailing in Alaska before moving down to the West Coast in September. The 2,770-passenger ship only has a few more weeks in the region, with its West Coast season running through late October before it repositions to the Caribbean. That makes this one of the last chances to catch Virgin's newest lady on the Pacific side of the continent.
For travellers, the story is a useful reminder of how fall cruise plans on the Mexican Riviera can flex. Storms hundreds of miles offshore can close a tender port without ever threatening the ship, so build some flexibility into excursion plans and keep an eye on pre-cruise communications from the line. Virgin's approach in this case was to warn early, change only what needed changing, and auto-refund affected tours — a decent template for how these situations should be handled.
If you're booked on a later Brilliant Lady sailing out of Los Angeles this month, it's worth checking your Virgin Voyages app or email for any updated port times before finalising independent tours, especially in Mazatlán where arrival is now mid-morning rather than early.
