A pizzeria in west London has taken the top spot in the 2026 50 Top Pizza world rankings — the first time a British restaurant has ever been crowned global pizza champion. Napoli on the Road, the project of chef Michele Pascarella, beat out heavyweights from New York, Milan and Naples to claim the title.

The winning spot runs three outposts — Chiswick, Richmond and Soho — all built on a modern take on Neapolitan tradition: puffy, leopard-spotted crusts with inventive toppings. The Wild Marinara, pairing semi-dry cherry tomatoes with taggiasche olives, Cetara anchovies and wild garlic pesto, is the dish to order, and vegans are catered for with four plant-based pies, including a zucchini pizza with vegan stracciatella.

Second place went to Una Pizza Napoletana on New York's Lower East Side, where Anthony Mangieri has spent three decades obsessing over dough, including stints in New Jersey, the East Village and San Francisco. The menu is just six pizzas, and the house rule is one pie per guest — so choose carefully. Third went to Confine in Milan, housed in a former ironmongery near the Duomo, where pizza comes as a tasting menu with pairings from a 500-bottle wine list focused on Campanian whites.

The rest of the list is a genuinely global affair. Italy holds strong with I Masanielli in Caserta — famous for maximalist creations like the Assoluto di Pomodoro, built on tomatoes seven different ways — and Seu Pizza Illuminati in Rome, which offers tasting menus of five to eight courses. The US takes two more spots with Pizzeria Sei in Los Angeles, where William Joo applies Japanese precision to Neapolitan craft, and Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco, which covers every regional style from Detroit to St Louis alongside its celebrated Neapolitan Margherita.

São Paulo's Leggera Pizza Napoletana is the sleeper hit, praised for the balance of its Margherita Verace alongside indulgences like Wagyu ragù with aged Caciocavallo. Tokyo lands twice: RistoPizza by Napoli Sta Ca, where Neapolitan-born chef Peppe Errichiello tops pies with sansho pepper and wasabi, and The Pizza Bar on 38th in the Mandarin Oriental, an eight-seat counter where Daniele Cason serves ultra-hydrated, two-day-fermented dough with the formality of a sushi counter. Rounding out the list is Baldoria in Madrid, which pairs Neapolitan and Turin-style padellino pizzas with live music and a Truffle Negroni.

Why it matters: the rankings double as a pizza pilgrimage itinerary. If you're in London, the world champion is a tube ride away and a fraction of the cost of a flight to Naples — and unlike some spots on the list, you won't need to fight for one of eight seats.
