Mitsui Ocean Cruises has lined up three brand-new productions for the maiden season of its newest ship, the Mitsui Ocean Sakura, a 458-guest vessel that began sailing on September 19, 2026. All three shows were created specifically for this season in partnership with Belinda King Creative Productions, the company behind many of the best-known stage shows at sea.
The trio of productions — Encore, Icons and Dance — features an international cast of vocalists and dancers and covers a deliberately wide spread of styles. Encore leans classical-crossover, with internationally recognised singers performing favourites like "The Prayer," "Hymne à L'Amour" and "Nessun Dorma," paired with choreography that mixes classical ballet with contemporary jazz. Icons is the nostalgic one, built around hits from The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Motown classics. Dance does what the name suggests, running through ballroom styles from the Quickstep to the Tango. All three play the ship's Ocean Stage theatre.
Live performance has become a signature of the line. Mitsui Ocean Cruises president Tsunemichi Mukai said onboard shows earn some of the highest guest ratings in the whole onboard experience, with strong feedback from both Japanese and international passengers — which is why the line has invested in original productions rather than generic revues.
The Sakura itself is a notable debut. It becomes the second ship in the Mitsui fleet alongside the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, was named in a ceremony in Yokohama, and kicked off its first season with a series of short cruises calling at Japanese ports. For travellers, that makes it an easy entry point: a compact ship, manageable sailing lengths and itineraries that showcase Japan's ports without long stretches at sea.
Who should care? If you like your cruising small-ship and entertainment-forward, this is a fresh option — under 500 guests means you'll never queue long for dinner, and a dedicated theatre programme of this ambition is unusual on a vessel this size. It's also a rare chance to experience a Japanese cruise line that caters comfortably to international guests while keeping a distinctly Japanese onboard flavour. With sails from Japan, it pairs naturally with a longer land trip around Yokohama, Tokyo or further into the country.
