A man was struck and killed on one of Cancun's busiest roads on Tuesday evening, and the driver who hit him did not stop.
The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, close to Plaza Cumbres. According to initial reports, the pedestrian — described as a local worker trying to reach a bus stop on the opposite side of the boulevard — attempted to cross from a gas station. Witnesses say he was running toward the median when a speeding vehicle hit him, throwing him forward before running him over. The vehicle then fled the scene.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Cancun Transit closed part of the boulevard while emergency services worked, diverting vehicles into the side lanes toward Plaza Cumbres. Traffic backed up badly for more than two hours before the road fully reopened.
One detail that stands out: the city says there is a pedestrian footbridge just metres from where the accident occurred. Crossing at street level instead of using it appears to have put the man in the path of fast-moving traffic. Police are now reviewing surveillance camera footage to identify the vehicle and its driver.
Why does this matter to visitors? Colosio Boulevard is the main artery connecting Cancun's hotel zone and airport corridor with the rest of the city, and most travellers will travel along it at some point — in a transfer van, a rental car or a colectivo. Roads here are wide, fast and not always pedestrian-friendly, and drivers should be alert for people crossing outside marked spots, particularly around dusk when light is low. If you're walking anywhere in Cancun, use footbridges where they exist, even when they add a few minutes; ground-level crossings of major boulevards are genuinely risky. Drivers renting cars should also know that serious collisions are expected to involve a police report, and leaving the scene carries severe penalties.
For locals, the story is sadly familiar: a worker crossing to catch a bus, a road with heavy traffic, and a driver who kept going. For visitors, it's a reminder that road safety in Cancun deserves the same attention as beach and sun safety.
