Delicate Arch gets the glory, but it also gets the gridlock. At sunset, the National Park Service says hundreds of people can crowd around Utah's most famous freestanding arch — hardly the solitary desert moment many travellers picture. Meanwhile, one of Arches National Park's best displays of sandstone architecture sits about half an hour from Moab with a fraction of the crush: the Windows Loop Trail.

The route runs roughly a mile through the park's Windows Section, threading together three major formations — North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch — in a single compact circuit. The NPS rates it easy, with only about 99 feet of elevation gain, which is exactly why it works so well for families. Kids can scramble right up to the bases of the arches and wander beneath them; the North Window alone is a gigantic, eye-shaped opening that stops most hikers in their tracks.

There's a built-in crowd-management trick, too. After reaching the arches, you can simply retrace the main gravel trail, or continue on the so-called primitive loop, which swings behind the formations for a different angle. Despite the name, it's not a serious undertaking — a bit of uneven ground, some steps, fewer signage markers — and it spreads visitors out further. Hikers who've done both consistently report it's nowhere near as jammed as the Delicate Arch trailhead.

One more reason to stay late: Arches is an International Dark Sky Park, and Utah has more Dark Sky-certified locations than any other state. The park stays open around the clock and actively encourages after-dark visits, so pairing the Windows hike with a stargazing session is a genuinely good plan, not just a marketing line.

For travellers, the appeal is simple — you get Arches' signature scenery (the park holds around 2,000 natural arches) without committing to a longer, hotter, busier trek. The trailhead sits about a 30-minute drive north of Moab, the adventure-sports town that makes a natural base, and Canyonlands Field Airport is the nearest commercial gateway with commuter flights from Phoenix, Denver, and Salt Lake City. If you're building a southern Utah itinerary, this is the hike to slot in early morning or at golden hour, camera ready.
