American Express welcome bonuses can swing wildly — the same card that pays 80,000 points one year might dangle 175,000 the next. The Points Guy has crunched years of offer history across Amex's most popular cards to answer the question every points collector faces: apply now, or hold out?

The headline finding is that patience pays. Take the Amex Platinum, which carries an $895 annual fee. Its welcome bonus sat at 80,000 points for roughly two years, then jumped to as much as 175,000 points in mid-2025 — with the spending requirement later rising to $12,000 over six months. TPG's rule of thumb: don't apply unless you can land at least 150,000 points, whether through a public or targeted offer.

The business cards are where the numbers get serious. The Business Platinum's current offer can reach a record 300,000 points after spending $20,000 in three months — worth up to $6,000 by TPG's valuations and far beyond anything the card offered as recently as 2024, when 150,000 points was standard. The Business Gold, meanwhile, doubled from 100,000 points to as much as 200,000 for $15,000 of spend. TPG suggests considering Business Gold at 100,000 points or better, and Business Platinum only once the offer hits 200,000.

On the consumer side, the Amex Gold — a favourite for its 4x earning at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets — has historically oscillated between 60,000 and 100,000 points. The 60,000-point floor is TPG's application threshold, so anything higher is a bonus. Cash-back cards have less room to move: the Blue Business Plus-style Graphite card ($295 fee) and everyday cash-back options top out around $200–$1,500 in statement credits, with the biggest cash sum ($1,500 after $50,000 of spend) aimed squarely at high-volume spenders.

Two traps matter as much as timing. First, Amex famously grants each welcome bonus only once per lifetime on a given card — apply for a weak offer and you may never be eligible for the headline-grabbing one later. Second, holding (or having held) a higher-tier card in the same family can disqualify you from a bonus on a lower-tier sibling, so a Platinum holder may find the Gold's offer is off the table.

The practical takeaway: check current and targeted offers before applying, benchmark them against the thresholds above, and if the offer falls short, wait — history suggests Amex bumps bonuses every year or two, especially in the first half of the year. For holidaymakers funding flights and hotels through points, timing an application around these cycles can be the difference between one long-haul redemption and two.
