Albufeira is best known for its beaches and bars, but on Saturday, October 17 the town's old-town energy shifts to the gym floor. The first Treino Solidário — a charity workout — invites locals and visitors to sweat for a good cause, with the entry price paid not in euros but in groceries.

The idea is simple: instead of a ticket fee, anyone joining donates one non-perishable food item (dry or canned) or a personal hygiene product at check-in. Everything collected goes to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Albufeira, the town's long-standing charitable institution, whose Social Inclusion Office supports 1,125 people in the municipality every single month — food parcels, essentials and practical help for families who live far from the postcard version of the Algarve.

The workout forms part of Pelo Combate à Pobreza e à Exclusão Social, an annual campaign run by the European Anti-Poverty Network – Portugal. Participants meet at 10am outside the Ajuda Alimentar Albufeira facilities at Urbanização Serva, Fase 7, Armazém H/I in Vale Paraíso, with a warm-up kicking off at 10.30am and the main session running from 11am to midday at Studio F gym, which is co-organising the event.

It's deliberately low-barrier. Numbers are capped at 50, so you'll need to register in advance, but everyone who takes part is covered by insurance and gets a small kit with water and light snacks. No elite fitness level required — this is a community session, not a competition. Details and sign-up are available from Santa Casa on 963 431 789 or 967 784 208, or by email.

Why should a traveller care? October is shoulder season in the Algarve: the summer crowds have thinned, the sea is still warm, and events like this offer a genuine way to meet locals rather than just pass through them. If you're staying in or near Albufeira that weekend, an hour of exercise and a can of beans is an easy, human way to give something back to the place you're enjoying — and the food collected goes straight to neighbours who need it.

One practical note: the meeting point in Vale Paraíso is a short drive or taxi ride from the old town and the main beach strip, so factor that into your morning. Bring your donation item with you, wear trainers, and register ahead of time since the 50-place cap is firm.
