Aman has finally confirmed what luxury hotel watchers have been waiting years for: its first hotel in the Maldives. Called Amanolu, the resort sits in the secluded Vaavu Atoll and is due to welcome its first guests in 2028. The name blends the Sanskrit word for peace with 'olu', the water lily found across the Indian Ocean region.
The setup is classic over-the-top Maldives, even by Aman standards. The main hotel will have just 52 rooms, designed by Kerry Hill Architects with the country's white coralline beaches and turquoise lagoons in mind. But the real headline is the layout: guests get a dedicated wellness island housing an Aman Spa and the brand's signature Spa Houses, plus a separate activity island for diving, snorkelling and watersports. Dining details haven't been announced yet, but several restaurants and bars are planned.
Then there are the 16 branded residences, each on its own private island. Some are oriented for sunrise or sunset, while others have beaches on both sides, so you get uninterrupted water views all day. Each home comes with five bedrooms, its own beach, a 25-metre pool and dedicated staff accommodation. No pricing has surfaced, but Aman's track record suggests these will sit firmly in the stratosphere.
For anyone who has been to the Maldives, the ritual is familiar: land at Velana International near Malé, transfer to a seaplane or branded speedboat, kick off your shoes and slip onto 'island time' - many resorts run an hour behind the capital. Amanolu is leaning into that barefoot-luxury formula, but with the brand's famously restrained design language and service-to-guest ratios.
Vaavu Atoll itself is a good pick beyond the hype. It's one of the quieter, less developed atolls, known for strong dive sites, channel dives with sharks and rays, and unspoilt reef. Aman's arrival will put a spotlight on an area most travellers currently skip in favour of the better-known North Malé Atolls.
If a five-bedroom private island is out of reach, the 52-key hotel is the realistic entry point - though 'realistic' is doing heavy lifting with an Aman price tag. Worth noting too that Aman has a devoted celebrity following, so expect this one to book out fast once reservations open. Travellers who like the sound of a wellness-focused island but want something sooner can still find plenty of spa-led resorts across the Maldives; Amanolu simply raises the bar for what a dedicated wellness island can look like when it opens in 2028.
