British cruise operator Ambassador Cruise Line has bought Oceania Sirena from rival Oceania Cruises, and it has a very specific job in mind. The 670-guest ship will be renamed Ambella and become the founding vessel of Ambassador Kreuzfahrten, a new brand aimed squarely at German holidaymakers.

Under a leaseback arrangement, the ship stays in service with Oceania until spring 2028, then transfers to Ambassador that summer. From the off it will be an adult-only, fully German-speaking ship, homeported in Bremerhaven and Kiel. The first season runs May to September 2028, with two repositioning cruises and 11 destination-heavy itineraries taking in northern Europe and the Baltics, plus a handful of southern European sailings.

There's a second life planned for the ship too. Ambassador has struck a long-term deal with the Institute for Shipboard Education, the non-profit behind Semester at Sea, which lets students study while sailing the world. Once the German summer season wraps, Ambella will host Semester at Sea programmes for around eight months a year, starting September 2028 through April 2029, under an initial 10-year agreement.

The move is the latest step in Ambassador's European expansion. It merged with French operator Compagnie Française de Croisières in January 2025, adding the Renaissance to its fleet, and that French arm rebranded as Ambassador Croisières in September 2026. Germany, says chief executive Christian Verhounig, is Europe's largest cruise market — and the pitch here is a smaller, intimate, adults-only ship at an accessible price for what the line calls the silver market.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is simple: if you're a German speaker who prefers small ships without kids on board, a new no-fly option sails from Bremerhaven and Kiel from summer 2028, with itineraries weighted towards port-rich northern Europe rather than big-ship megaresort cruising. UK-based cruisers won't see Ambella on home waters, but it's a sign of where Ambassador is heading — building out distinct language-specific brands across the continent.

Bookings, pricing and detailed itineraries are expected to emerge as the 2028 launch approaches, so anyone tempted should watch for when Ambassador Kreuzfahrten opens sales.
