Amsterdam Airport Schiphol just added a serious perk for cardholders: American Express has opened a Centurion Lounge there, making AMS the first airport in continental Europe to host one of the brand's premium spaces. The doors opened on September 17, and the lounge sits in a handy spot between Concourses E and F — right in the heart of Schiphol's international departures area. It runs daily from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., covering everything from early KLM departures to the evening long-haul wave.
The space covers nearly 6,000 square feet, which puts it in solid mid-size territory by Centurion standards. What sets it apart is the theme: rather than a generic airport aesthetic, Amex has leaned into Dutch art, landscapes and design, with floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the light and views across the airfield. Works by local artists line the walls, giving it more of a gallery-meets-lounge feel than the usual grey armchairs.
Food and drink follow the same local-first approach. There's a dedicated Blue Roast Coffee Bar with its own barista pouring locally sourced coffee — fitting for a country that takes its caffeine seriously. The kitchen serves seasonal dishes built around Dutch and wider European flavours and ingredients, and a full bar handles beer and cocktails. It's a noticeably more regional spread than you'll find at many airport lounges, where the menu rarely acknowledges what country you're in.
On the practical side, seating options are varied: comfy armchairs, café tables, high tops, booths and group tables, plus designated quiet workspaces for anyone who needs to actually get things done before a flight. There are private restrooms, a phone room for calls, USB charging throughout and free WiFi. In short, it covers the two main pre-flight modes — relax or work — without much compromise either way.
For travellers, this matters because Centurion Lounges are among the most sought-after card benefits, and until now the network's European footprint skewed towards the UK. Anyone flying through Schiphol — a major hub for KLM and a huge connecting point for Europe-bound and intercontinental routes — with an eligible Amex Platinum or Centurion card can now access it, which could easily justify arriving a bit earlier. Expect queues at peak times; these lounges have a well-earned reputation for filling up fast during the morning and evening departure banks.
It also raises the bar for Schiphol generally, which has plenty of lounges but few at this level of design and dining. If you've got a long connection at AMS, it's now one of the better places to wait in Europe.
